报告题目：Two Case Studies in Geotechnical Engineering

The seminar presents two case studies in geotechnical engineering. The first case deals with the leaning tower of Pisa. The leaning tower of Pisa Tower is 58.4 meters high with a foundation diameter of 19.6 meters. It started to lean southward following the second construction stage in 1178 AD. Over the last 800 years, the south side has settled more than the north side, giving about a 2 m differential settlement and a 5.5 degrees’ inclination. At present, the seventh cornice overhangs the first one by about 4.1 m. Analyses have been carried out to understand the mechanism of movement in order to find a practical solution to stabilize the tower.
The second case deals with the progressive deformation of the Edmonton Convention Center. The movement of a retaining structure required for the foundation of a convention center will be discussed. Movement of the wall and its underlying foundation are related to the excavation process. A numerical model was used to calculate the localized deformation of the excavation in which preexisting shear band dominated the deformation mechanism of the excavation for the center.
